What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses shockwaves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. It is considered a form of regenerative medicine because it promotes the healing and regeneration of injured and damaged tissues, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Shockwave therapy also promotes healing post-surgery and can increase range of motion and improve shoulder use as well as reducing shoulder pain.

What to Expect During a Shockwave Therapy Treatment

When you visit one of our chiropractors for shockwave therapy treatment, you can remain fully clothed other than at the treatment area. You will sit or lie on a comfortable, padded treatment table. One of our chiropractors will use a small, hand-held device next to the targeted area of the skin. This device sends shockwaves deep into the tissues, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This increases blood flow and sends growth hormones to the area, which promotes new tissue growth.

Is Shockwave Therapy Safe?

Yes, shockwave therapy is safe. Some patients experience mild discomfort during the treatment, but don’t find it painful. Each treatment can take between 15 and 20 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. In general, patients fully recover from any side effects or discomfort immediately after treatment or within 24 hours.

What Other Conditions Can be Treated by Shockwave Therapy?

Our chiropractors may recommend shockwave therapy if you have any of these conditions:

  • Achilles’ tendinopathies
