Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a safe, non-invasive alternative medicine treatment that can stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. At Gonstead Physical Medicine, we have a team of chiropractors and medical specialists who are committed to providing drug-free pain relief, enhancing overall wellness, and improving quality of life. We may recommend HBOT for pain relief, treatment of repetitive stress or overuse injuries, wound healing, post-surgery recovery, autoimmune conditions, headaches, and more.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment?

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment uses a pressurized chamber to deliver 100% oxygen to your lungs. While normal air in a room contains around 21% oxygen, receiving 100% oxygen helps your lungs absorb higher levels of oxygen to help your tissues and body heal.

When and Why You Should Consider HBOT

You should consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy if you are interested in an alternative to surgery, prescription medication, or invasive treatment methods. You might also consider HBOT if you have tried other treatment methods without success or if your symptoms or condition is chronic. Our chiropractic team may recommend HBOT to treat:

  • Sports injuries
  • Auto injuries
  • Work injuries
  • Repetitive stress and overuse injuries
  • Brain injury or concussion
  • Neurological conditions
  • Developmental disorders
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Lyme disease
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Post-surgical healing
  • Diabetic wounds
  • Neuropathy
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Weight gain

What Happens During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

During HBOT, you will sit or lie in a special pressurized chamber. We may fit you with a specialized mask or oxygen hood. Each treatment lasts around one or two hours. When the door to the chamber is closed, you will hear a hissing noise as oxygen enters. Your ears may feel stopped up or pop. We will monitor your treatment the entire time and we may have you take occasional breaks.

What Happens After Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

After treatment, we will take your vital signs and we may ask you some questions. We will monitor you for a brief period of time, and you can then go home or resume your normal daily activities.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Safe?

Yes, HBOT is a safe, non-invasive treatment option. We administer the treatment in a clinical setting with the utmost care for the health and safety of our patients. The treatment and your health are monitored throughout.
