Workplace ergonomics is the conscious, careful design of the workspace, workflow, and work equipment to facilitate ease of use and access. By improving your workplace ergonomics, you can reduce your risk of accident or injury, and lessen your chances of suffering from aches, pains, or strains after a long day of work. Dr. Del Angel at Gonstead Physical Medicine provides five ergonomics tips to help you stay out of pain.

Use an Adjustable Chair

An adjustable chair is one that allows you to adjust the lumbar region, seat height and tilt, height of the chair, and the armrests so that they are in the best position for your height. This can prevent lower back pain and stiffness.

Maintain Proper Posture

Sitting properly at your computer can prevent neck and back strain and aches and pains. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your thighs turned slightly downward. Keep your head level over your shoulders and your back flat against the back of your chair.

Use Proper Safety Equipment

Always use the recommended safety equipment and tools for the job you’re doing. You are at a greater risk of injury if you don’t use safety equipment or use equipment improperly.

Take Necessary Breaks

If you work at a computer, take a break every hour or so to prevent eye strain and to stretch your back to avoid lower back pain or strain. If you work in a labor-intensive job or are on your feet, take a break every two hours or so to sit down, stretch, and regroup.

Arrange Your Workspace for Ease of Use

Arranging your workspace for ease of use can also help make your workspace more ergonomic.. Keep frequently used items and equipment out at arm’s reach so that you don’t have to keep getting up, bending over, reaching, or lifting throughout the day. You should also ensure your computer monitor is at eye level, and your keyboard and mouse are at chest level for optimum posture.
